Industrial RAS in Jining Is Redefining Commercial Sea Bass Farming

Turnkey commercial Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS) facility featuring indoor fish tanks and filtration systems

In modern commercial aquaculture, transitioning from traditional pond farming to high-density, land-based production is rarely simple. When our client set out to establish a mega-scale aquaculture park in Jining, China, the objective was ambitious: construct a full-scale Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS) capable of reliably producing 15,000 metric tons of sea bass (Lateolabrax maculatus) annually while maintaining high energy efficiency and strict water quality control.

Spanning a massive 150,000 ㎡, the facility represents one of the region’s largest industrial land-based aquaculture deployments. Today, the facility stands as a operational benchmark, delivering superior economic returns, rock-solid stability, and total client satisfaction.

The Challenge: Engineering for High Density at Scale

Scaling an indoor RAS facility to 150,000 square meters presents severe biological and engineering hurdles. Operating at high stocking densities means organic waste, bio-load, and metabolic byproducts accumulate rapidly. To reach the target yield of 15,000 tons per year without risking mass mortality or stunted growth, the system required continuous, unyielding filtration and water purification.

Furthermore, running continuous water pumps, biofilters, and aeration across a facility of this footprint can result in steep energy overheads. The challenge was not just growing fish—it was engineering a closed-loop environment that could keep operational costs low enough to guarantee a fast Return on Investment (ROI).

The Solution: A Integrated Turnkey RAS Infrastructure

To address these hurdles, our engineering team designed and deployed a comprehensive, automated RAS layout tailored specifically to the biological habits of sea bass.

Advanced Mechanical & Biological Filtration: Heavy-duty microfiltration drum filters rapidly strip out suspended solids and feed debris before organic breakdown can compromise water clarity. High-capacity biofilter towers follow, converting harmful ammonia and nitrite into non-toxic compounds continuously.

Smart Oxygenation & Flow Hydraulics: To prevent oxygen dips during peak feeding, we installed intelligent pure-oxygen injection loops paired with real-time DO sensors. Coupled with custom low-head hydraulic channels, water flows smoothly across all cultivation tanks using low-energy variable frequency pumps, dramatically cutting electricity consumption.

Biosecure Environment Control: By enclosing the entire 150,000m² footprint indoors, the facility isolates livestock from wild pathogens, severe weather shifts, and local surface water contamination.

The Outcome: High Yields, Low Costs, and High Client Satisfaction

Since reaching full operational capacity, the Jining facility has consistently outperformed baseline projections. Reusing over 95% of its process water, the farm operates with minimal environmental impact while maintaining exceptional water parameter consistency.

The client has achieved year-round continuous harvesting cycles, capturing peak market pricing with predictable output. Survival rates across production batches have consistently surpassed 92%, accompanied by highly optimized Feed Conversion Ratios (FCR).

By achieving robust biological stability and significantly lower energy expenditures than standard industrial benchmarks, the project generated immediate profitability—earning praise from the client’s management team and setting a strong foundation for future expansion.
