Our Bio Filter Media (MBBR medium) is the biological engine in modern recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS). This medium has been specially designed to provide the maximum effective surface area for the growth of beneficial microorganisms, thereby facilitating the rapid conversion of toxic ammonia (NH3) and nitrite (NO2) into harmless nitrate. Product Specification

Explanation
A large amount of suspended biological carriers with a specific gravity close to that of water (i.e., what you call “filter media”) are added to the reaction tank (such as an aeration tank or anaerobic tank). Through aeration or stirring, these carriers are uniformly fluidized and tumbled in the water. As wastewater flows through the reactor, a biofilm rich in microorganisms grows on the surface of the carriers. These microorganisms decompose and digest organic pollutants in the water.
